The believer magazine, the famous bimonthly of literary and cultural criticism published by the Beverly Rogers, Carol C. Harter Black Mountain Institute of the College of Liberal Arts at UNLV, will cease publication after its spring 2022 issue.

Founded in 2003, the five-time National Magazine Award finalist was published by Dave Eggers’ independent newspaper publisher McSweeney’s during the early part of its existence, before being acquired by BMI in 2017. Over the years, the magazine has published an impressive number of acclaimed titles. and promising writers and illustrators, including Amy Sedaris, Hilton Als, Sarah Marshall, Nick Hornby and Michael Kupperman.

It also inspired the creation of the annual Believer Fest, which has drawn writers, cultural commentators and musicians like Aimee Mann, Jonathan Lethem and Anita Sarkeesian to speak and perform around Las Vegas.

The believer thrived for a while under BMI, but the punch of the coronavirus slowdown and the tough sledge all magazines face in a largely digital world left “no way forward to continue publishing the magazine “Jennifer Keene, dean of the College of UNLV Liberal Arts, said in a statement.

While the statement doesn’t say the same, it’s also easy to infer that April’s resignation from The believerFormer Joshua Wolf Shenk editor-in-chief – who resigned ignominy after exposing himself on a Zoom call – hasn’t helped the magazine’s long-term outlook.

Keene adds that the dissolution of The believer frees up resources that can be redirected “to initiatives most essential to BMI’s mission,” including literary scholarships and the “City of Asylum” shelter program for writers facing persecution in their home countries .

And the Believer 2022 festival is still scheduled for April 28-30, after The believerthe latest issue of is published.
