Kentucky Monthly Magazine acquires Kentucky Explorer Magazine; publication closes after 34 years

After more than 34 years, Jackson’s Kentucky Explorer Magazine has published its latest issue. Readers enjoyed the historical articles, old photos, genealogical advice, and personal essays, in the black and white magazine that was printed on newsprint.

Starting with the February 2021 issue of Kentucky Monthly Magazine, a section of each issue will include content, and even be designed to resemble the familiar Kentucky Explorer pages.

Today, as Kentucky Explorer owner Charles Hayes and his staff plan to retire, the reins have passed to Steve Vest, editor and publisher of Kentucky Monthly Magazine.

“Kentucky Monthly has celebrated the people, places, events and culture of the Commonwealth for over 22 years. We have always seen the Kentucky Explorer as an ally in this pursuit, ”said Vest. “To meet this challenge, I believe we are upholding the state’s motto, ‘United We Stand’, and we are happy that Kentucky Explorer will live on the pages of Kentucky Monthly.”

Since this news broke, dozens and dozens of Kentucky Explorer readers have called the Kentucky Monthly office, some in tears. “It is obvious that they love their magazine and we have assured them that together we will honor what has been for years to come,” said Vest.

Deborah Kohl Kremer will be the editor-in-chief of Kentucky Explorer. Stories, articles, old photos and memorabilia can be emailed to [email protected] or by mail to Kentucky Monthly, PO Box 559, Frankfort KY 40601.

Kentucky Explorer’s pages are filled with reader-submitted content, which will continue, but subscribers will also be introduced to Kentucky Monthly and the wide array of stories highlighting the best of Bluegrass State.

“Kentucky Monthly will fill all current subscriptions to Kentucky Explorer subscribers,” Vest said. “And we think these subscribers will appreciate all we have to offer.”

Kentucky Monthly Magazine has served Kentuckians since 1998 and has over 100,000 readers per issue. For more information visit
